ICSI Treatment
Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) differs from conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) in that the embryologist selects a single sperm to be injected directly into an egg, instead of fertilization taking place in a dish where many sperm are placed near an egg. ICSI enables fertilization to happen when there are very few sperm available. ICSI is highly rated by the doctors and is a major treatment for male infertility.
In India, ICSI involves the use of specialized micromanipulation tools and equipment and inverted microscopes that enable embryologists to select and pick up individual sperm in a specially designed ICSI needle. The needle is carefully advanced through the outer shell of the egg (Zona) and the egg membrane – and the sperm is injected into the inner part (cytoplasm) of the egg. These are fertilized in laborites and then best of the fertilized egg is transferred to the womb.
ICSI is recommended when-
- Very low sperm count
- Poor morphology (abnormal shape)
- Poor motility (not moving normally)
- Unexpectedly low fertilization rate
- Failure of previous IVF attempt
- Embryo testing.
