Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery
In India, adjustable gastric banding is done with the help of laparoscope. The surgery is done using a tiny camera that is placed in your belly. It allows your surgeon to see inside your belly. Your surgeon will make 4 to 6 small cuts and insert surgical tools and a camera through the incisions. The doctor will then wrap a device (band) around the upper part of your stomach to form a ring. Attached to the ring is a thin tube leading to an access port that is left under the skin. The access port is the place where the doctor puts in a needle to add or take away saline. Adding saline tightens the band and makes the stomach smaller. The doctor can take away saline if the ring is too tight. Your surgery may take only 30 to 60 minutes if your surgeon has done a lot of these procedures.
When you eat after having this surgery, the small pouch will fill up quickly. You will feel full after eating just a small amount of food. The food in the small upper pouch will slowly empty into the main part of your stomach. Typically, patients who undergo adjustable gastric banding procedures lose less weight over the first 3.5 years.
