Liver Surgery
Liver Transplant is surgically removing a diseased liver out of the patient’s body and attaching a healthy Liver of the donor (allograft) at the same anatomic location of the original Liver. The technique used is also called Orthotopic transplantation. Liver Transplantation is almost a life saving option for end-stage Liver disease and Acute Liver failures. However, Liver transplant can be done with both Cadaveric donors and living donors.
INDICATIONS
End – stage Liver disease and acute failures are some of the indications of a Liver transplant. Cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma can result because of long term alcohol abuse, untreated Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B. Uncontrolled metastatic cancer outside liver, active drug or alcohol abuse and active septic infections are absolute contraindications.
LIVER TRANSPLANTATION TREATMENTS OFFERED:
- Liver Resection – A liver resection is the surgical removal of all or a portion of the liver. It is also referred to as a Hepatectomy, full or partial.
- Partial hepatectomy – removal of a portion of the liver
- Total hepatectomy – removal of the entire liver
- Laparoscopic liver surgery –The abdomen is insufflated with carbon dioxide and a number of small incisions are made to provide access for the laparoscope and surgical instruments. The resected liver is enclosed in a bag and removed, through a small incision in the umbilical area. Minimally invasive surgical option reduces pain, scaring and recovery time.
- Liver transplant – Replacing the liver with a healthy donor’s liver
- Liver biopsy – A liver biopsy is a procedure in which a small needle is inserted into the liver to collect a tissue sample. This is performed as an office or outpatient procedure or during surgery. The tissue is then analyzed in a laboratory to help doctors diagnose a variety of disorders and diseases in the liver.
- Surgery to repair the liver following trauma
- Chemoembolization – It is an amalgamation of Chemotherapy and Embolization which is not only used to treat the liver cancer but also the cancer that had spread to the other parts of the body.
